How to add Calories & Protein to food

Use these foods to add calories and protein to foods you eat. 

 

 

Dairy

Powdered Milk

  • Add to potatoes, casseroles, meatloaf, sauces, ground beef, puddings, muffins or milkshakes
  • Make High Protein Milk: Add 1 cup powdered milk to 1 quart of whole milk. Drink instead of regular milk.  Use in place of regular milk or water in drinks and cooking (for making cooked cereals, soup, pudding, custard or sauces).

Sweetened Condensed Milk

  • Add to pies, puddings, milkshakes and other desserts
  • Use as dip for fruit
  • Mix 1-2 tablespoons with peanut butter and spread on graham crackers or bread.

Cream, Half & Half or Evaporated Milk

  • Substitute for regular milk in desserts, meat dishes and cooked cereals

Instant Breakfast

  • Mix with milk or prepare a smoothie

Plain or Sweet Yogurt

  • Add to fruits and desserts; use to top cereal, pancakes, waffles. Add to milk-based drinks and gelatin desserts.

 

Meat, Poultry, Eggs, Cheese, Nuts & Beans

  • Meat, Poultry or Fish
    • Add small pieces of any cooked meat or fish to vegetables, salads, casseroles, soups
    • Add strained baby food meats to soups, gravies or casseroles
    • Serve with gravy, cream or cheese sauce
    • Breading or frying adds calories
  • Eggs
    • Add cooked eggs to tossed salads, tuna or chicken salad, casseroles, creamed meats
    • Add extra egg to French toast and pancake batter, quiches, custards
    • Mix raw egg into meatloaf, meatballs, hamburger and casseroles before cooking.

(Do not eat raw eggs in uncooked items such as cookie dough or milkshakes)

  • Cheese
    • Eat as a snack or add to sandwiches, salads, eggs, soups, pasta, dip or vegetables, mashed potatoes, rice, meatloaf, breads
    • Sprinkle grated cheese over canned fruit
  • Peanut Butter
    • Spread on sandwiches, muffins, crackers, fruit slices, waffles, pancakes, celery
    • Blend with milk drinks and milkshakes; add to ice cream; top cookies and cakes
  • Dried Beans & Peas
    • Use in soups, casseroles, pasta and rice dishes
    • Blend with oil and spices and spread on crackers or bread
  • Tofu
    • Try Mori-nu, a brand that does not require refrigeration until after opening at home

 

Other

  • Wheat Germ
    • Add to casseroles, meat, breads, muffins, pancakes or waffle recipes
    • Sprinkle on top of vegetables or toast; use in place of breadcrumbs
  • Butter, Margarine or Oil
    • Add to soups, mashed & baked potatoes, hot cereal, grits, rice, noodles, bread
    • Use melted butter or margarine as a dip for vegetables or seafood
