Mouth Care

Radiation therapy and chemotherapy can lead to mouth sores. It is important to take proper care of your teeth and gums. Use these tips to keep your mouth healthy:

  • Use saline solution as a mouthrinse after each meal and at bed time to keep bacteria from growing. You can use more often if desired.

                Recipe for Saline Solution:

Mix 1 teaspoon salt + 1 teaspoon baking soda into 1 quart of water.

Use as mouthwash- do not drink.

  • Increase your fluid intake as fluids are an important part of your mouth care.
  • Include foods high in protein such as:

Dried Beans      Eggs       Yogurt
Yogurt Milk Eggs
Poultry Peanut Butter     Cheese

  • Clean teeth and gums thoroughly with a soft toothbrush after meals.
  • If you wear dentures:
    • Clean daily
    • Remove whenever possible
    • Loose-fitting dentures can irritate the mouth and gums
  • See your dentist at least once a year for a cleaning and check-up.
  • Ask your healthcare provider about "user-friendly" over the counter mouth care choices.
  • Let your doctor know if you notice white patches on your tongue or other areas of your mouth as this may be a sign of thrush.

  • Foods that are hard or crunch, spicy or acidic. These may irritate your mouth..
  • Avoid commercial mouthwashes that contain alcohol.
  • Avoid smoking or chewing tobacco.
