Who is a radiation therapist?
A radiation therapist is an individual who uses high-energy
radiation to cure malignant (cancerous) diseases or help
manage the symptoms of these diseases in patients. A radiation
therapist carries out a treatment plan prescribed by a radiation
oncologist (the medical doctor) and developed by the dosimetrist
or medical physicist. The radiation therapist works closely
with oncology nurses and other support staff members such
as nutritionists to help patients cope with cancer and the
prescribed treatment. The radiation therapist is a vital
member of this cancer-fighting team of medical specialists.
Following successful completion of the program, the student
meets the educational requirements of the American Registry
of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in order to establish
eligibility to take the national certification examination
and become a registered radiation therapist, designated RT
(T). Students should visit the ARRT website to learn more
about this and other eligibility requirements for taking
the national certification examination.
